Hubert Chesneau Golf course designer was invited to create from past corn fields of over 139 hectares (350 acres), around the Chateau of Versailles (once home of Louis XIV), a Stadium course of International stature. On completion The Golf National would not only be the home for the French Open but also Acknowledged as one of the finest championship courses in Europe, both by the professional and the amateur golfer who have measured their talents against the course. The Albatros has also been nominated as a ‘Ryder Cup’ venue and is now the permanent venue of the French Open which has become a prestigious event on the European Tour.
From the back tees the total length of over 7000 yards is not the main difficulty: It is the diversity of shots. The diversity of a “links course” combined with“target golf, “water hazards” and “bunkers” will create the demand for a full set of clubs. Nothing is hidden from the player but the player must ‘play’ the course to achieve. Be aggressive on the first 6 holes; take the birdie chance on the 12th, and protect your score on the final holes when excitement can challenge the player – particularly in match play.
A centre for both National and International Championships. The Albatros is a demanding course, but not kept for “Top World players” has it is open throughout the year to the amateur golfer.
